German code breaking in World War II achieved some notable successes cracking British Naval ciphers until well into the fourth year of the war, but also suffered from a problem typical of the German armed forces of the time: numerous branches and institutions maintained their own cryptographic departments, working on their own without collaboration or sharing results with . This book also reports the Allied mass murder of the German people after the end of World War II during which the Allies—led by General Dwight D. Eisenhower—murdered approximately million German prisoners of war through intentional starvation and exposure to the elements. A code replaces the words of a message with letters, numbers, or symbols. Both the Allies and the Axis made extensive use of codes during the war. The Germans and Japanese used a code creator called the Enigma machine to create ciphers (a type of code that adds or replaces letters and numbers to disguise the information). Cryptography as used extensively during World War II, with a plethora of code and cipher systems fielded by the nations involved. In addition, the theoretical and practical aspects of cryptanalysis, or codebreaking, were much advanced.. Probably the most important codebreaking event of the war was the successful decryption by the Allies of the German "Enigma" Cipher.
